John Parkin was a pioneer in market research and subsequently introduced over 20 new products resulting in over $100,000,000 in sales. He started five companies from an idea, helped raise over $50,000,000 in venture capital, took some through to IPO, and gained national market share. He was interviewed by 60 Minutes for having the most innovative company in the U.S. John has turned companies from deficit to profitability and focuses on turning ideas into reality. Currently, he is starting two non-profits to employ and providing respite programs for the developmentally disabled.
- What is a Problem, but an opportunity to succeed? This attitude is a culture that permeates an organization.
- Features vs. Benefits. Features are in the brochure, benefits sell. John emphasizes the need to understand how to sell benefits as every employee is a salesperson and a representative of your company.
- Identifying a Hole in the Market. Why did you start your business? Probably you thought there was a need or hole in the market and you thought you could fill the hole and make a living. John will discuss this concept and the relevance it has today.
- Competition. Understanding your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses.
- Differentiating and Succeeding.
- Customer Needs. Do you understand who your customer is?
- Performance Milestones. Tracking your progress with milestones to better understand your strengths and weaknesses.
- Managing Expectations. Do you reward people & communicate effectively with your employees, partners and investors?
- Senior Managements' Role/Vision Reinforcing. Management needs to be communicative and supportive both in good and lean times to keep moral and spirits high.
In every company that John was associated with or started, he recognized that a problem is just an opportunity, just as an objection is an opportunity. John sold more during recessions and economic down-turns because he sold benefits that would position them for when the economy would turn positive. All objections and problems are opportunities to close a deal, make money, save money, find out more information, and make a relationship right.
